Without raised awareness and an accessible and regular HIV test, London residents could be victims of a potential epidemic.
In 2005, hundreds of medical professionals came together to discuss the growing need for raised awareness and regular HIV tests – London doctors, nurses and other healthcare professionals met at the Capital Doctor conference to discuss preventing an HIV epidemic in the UK’s capital.
The conference looked at how to improve healthcare in general across London. It was felt there was more of a need for the HIV test, London’s diverse population means there is a vast array of people all with very different medical problems. Preventing an HIV epidemic depends on raising awareness and providing health care across the board, ensuring that a HIV test in London is accessible.
In 2004, the London Assembly carried out another report into HIV and estimated that without a wake-up call including raised awareness and regular HIV tests, London could have around 50,000 HIV cases by 2009. It is thought that the capital is more prone to the disease making it more important that Londoners search out a HIV test – London is thought to be home to 60% of the UK’s HIV victims.
STDs still have a stigma and embarrassment associated with them, but ignorance or embarrassment of diseases such as HIV could be deadly. Many health professionals believe there is an increased need for the HIV test; London heterosexuals in particular are one of the fastest growing groups that are susceptible to the disease. Some doctors blame the lack of awareness and prevention campaigns which peaked in the 1980s when AIDS and HIV first reached UK shores. Generations have since grown up without experiencing the hard hitting early campaigns on the dangers of HIV, and this some believe, has created a deep-rooted apathy and even ignorance on the dangers of HIV. It’s hoped more people will wake up to the dangers and choose to take responsibility for their sexual health by having a HIV test – London has some of the best, accessible and specialist sexual health clinics available in the UK. It’s thought that around 8,000 people in London are unaware that they are infected with HIV.
