Experts are recommending that 15 – 59-year-olds in specific areas of the country should be offered an HIV test as standard, according to a recent story on BBC News.
The recommendations, backed by the Department of Health, claim that in 42 trusts with two or more HIV cases per 1000 people, anyone joining a GP should be offered the HIV test. London contains most of the high-prevalence areas that would qualify for this measure, but there are also locations in Brighton, Manchester, Blackpool and Birmingham. Around 20% of the population would receive this ‘automatic’ HIV test. London health experts hope this move will ‘normalise’ HIV tests, which still carry a stigma that puts many people off from being tested.
However, many people may not wish to get tested at their GP for reasons of confidentiality and convenience. They may need to wait longer that they would wish for test results, and they may prefer to have a completely anonymous test so even their local doctor doesn’t have records of it. The solution for people wanting this type of HIV test in London is to go to a private clinic. With increasing numbers of these walk-in or appointment clinics opening across the country, patients will be able to find one in a convenient location. They offer the utmost in discretion, and tests are carried out in smart, exclusive surroundings.
Another reason for patients to choose an HIV test in London private clinics is simply because there are more advanced levels of testing available. For those who are being tested 90 days after contact, tests can be received within 60 seconds, minimising the wait. This also means that support and counselling is on hand immediately from experienced professionals should the test come back positive. There is also the HIV Duo test that includes HIV 1 and HIV 2 antibodies and the p24 antigen, offering the ultimate in accuracy.
GP clinics can be extremely busy, with limited time available for each patient. If you are tested positive for HIV, you will want to receive the best in support, counselling and aftercare. An HIV test at London GPs simply can’t offer the same level of service as a private clinic, where experienced professionals will be on hand to give intensive pre- and post-test counselling. For those who feel they may have put themselves at risk of contracting the HIV virus, getting an HIV test in London private clinics will ensure you are guided through the process with care and empathy.
