New research shows that more teenagers need to take an STD test – in London and across the UK.
The only way to find out and confirm whether or not you have a sexually transmitted disease is by taking an STD test – London has some of the best sexual health clinics around, offering speedy results and walk-in clinics. But despite this, there are rising concerns that teenagers simply aren’t coming forward to take a regular STD test. London’s National Aids Trust has found that nearly half of all under-25s do not use a condom with new partners.
The shocking research has raised fears that sex diseases amongst teenagers could rocket. It’s a surprisingly high statistic considering the high profile awareness campaigns and cultural shift towards safe sex. But out of those questioned, over 200 said they rarely or never used a condom. Such an approach raises huge concerns that without taking a regular STD test, London teenagers could be vulnerable to STI epidemics.
The National Aids Trust has called on the government to introduce more condom advertising on TV before 9pm to target the younger age-groups. Using a condom reduces the risk of STDs – but without clear awareness, young people won’t come forward for an STD test in London unless worrying symptoms appear. The Trust said the British public need a “wake-up call” to the risks. Taking a regular STD test and using condoms ensures you’re being pro-active about your sexual health and safeguarding others you sleep with.
It isn’t just ignorance about using condoms in new relationships that concerns the Trust. Those couples who stop using condoms after a certain period together without screening themselves for sexually transmitted diseases are also at risk. It doesn’t matter how monogamous they are, if one of them has an STI and hasn’t taken an STD test to find out, they are both at risk.
A MORI survey suggests 49% of Britons don’t regularly use a condom with a new sexual partner, putting them at risk of common sexually transmitted infections, including HIV. A spokesperson from the National Aids Trust told the press: “We need to educate the whole population in the importance of condoms.” Without increased awareness more young people will have to come forward for an STD test.
