GUM Clinic – London Women and the Jade Effect

August 8th, 2011

More women are checking into a GUM clinic – London women of all ages are now more aware of the cervical cancer risk thanks to the Jade Goody story.

London is a busy place, with thousands of women passing through – some of whom don’t seem to make time to register with a doctor. People go to London on a temporary work contract, for a secondment, for work experience in a London-centric field such as the media industry. As well as short sojourns to the capital, many women move around a lot because of the nature of lifestyles in the city – one minute you could be in a house-share, the next you may need to move out into a bedsit. And this transitory existence can impact on health care – women may not get regular notices for smear tests, and young women won’t even think about being screened. This is why GUM clinics in London are in part so busy – GUM clinics (genito-urinary medicine) offer a way for London women to get treated for any std or sexual health issues without having to wait for their GP.

GUM Clinic – London Women Come Forward

And in the UK, the current regulations are women aged 25-49 are invited to a free cervical screening every three years with their GP. But more young women are turning to their local GUM clinic in London as a result of the Jade Goody story. The fact that Jade was diagnosed with cervical cancer in her mid-twenties raises concerns about whether younger women should be offered a smear test too. And many women are not waiting for the government to decide – they are taking their health into their own hands and going to their nearest GUM clinic. London has been shocked by the Jade Goody story, but the one good thing about the case is the fact that more GUM clinics in London and across the UK have witnessed an increase in women coming forward for smears. Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland already offer women aged 20-24 smear tests, and England has been urged to lower the screening age in light of the high profile Jade Goody case. As it stands, women under the age of 25 need to find a GUM clinic – London or across England – and request a smear until they reach the age of 25 when they will receive an invite from their GP.
