Travel Clinic – indication cholera vaccine

Adults and children requiring pre–exposure immunisation against Cholera are assessed at CityDocs London travel clinics or one of their network of travel clinics across the country

  • Adults and children over the age of 6 years requiring active pre-exposure immunisation against cholera-advised to have at citydoc travel clinic
  • Adults and children who are intending to travel with remote itineraries in areas where cholera epidemics are occurring are advised at the travel clinic to be vaccinated
  • Relief or disaster aid workers-recommended at our travel clinic

Patients will be identified following travelling risk assessment at our travel clinic and use of online tools e.g. fit for travel

Travel Clinic – contraindications to vaccine

  • No valid consent for travel clinic vaccine
  • Vaccination should be delayed in individuals suffering from an acute gastro–intestinal illness – advise given at our travel clinic
  • A confirmed anaphylactic reaction to any excipients of the vaccine would preclude vaccination at the travel clinic
  • At citydoc travel clinic we advise Dukoral vaccine should not be administered to subjects who have had a previous reaction
  • Acute febrile illness (minor illness not contraindication-at this travel clinic)
  • Pregnancy and breastfeeding is contraindicated for vaccination at citydoc travel clinic
  • Patients with suppressed immune system – a contraindication at our travel clinic
  • Where there are doubts as to the patient’s suitability for the vaccine advice should be sought from CityDoc travel clinic helpline

Travel Clinic network CityDoc, administration vaccine

Oral, killed cholera vaccine (Dukoral) is supplied at citydoc travel clinic as approximately 3ml of a whitish suspension in a glass vial. A sachet of sodium hydrogen carbonate as white granules is also supplied and should be mixed with water. Cholera vaccine can be given at the same time as injected vaccines at the travel clinic. Food and drink should be avoided for one hour before attending our travel clinic and one hour after vaccination. Oral administration of other medicinal products should be avoided for one hour before and after administration of the vaccine at the citydoc travel clinic.
