Travel Clinic – indication for vaccine

These are the following indications for receiving a vaccine at citydoc travel clinic. It is one of the commonest vaccines vaccines administered at our travel clinic.

• Active immunisation against hepatitis A virus infection for adults and adolescents 16 years and older attending the travel clinic


• Patients will be identified following travelling risk assessment at citydoc travel clinic


• Patients with chronic liver disease at travel clinic appt.


• Patients with haemophilia (these patients should be immunised subcutaneously)


• Men who have sex with men attending travel clinic review

People who work with primates, will be advised at their travel clinic consult to consider hepatitis A.

Travel Clinic – contraindications to vaccine

• No valid consent taken at the travel clinic appointment


• Children under 16 years of age attending citydoc travel clinic


• Patients with suppressed immune system reviewed in travel clinic


• Patients with thrombocytopenia or bleeding disorders


• Hypersensitivity to any excipients contained in the vaccine – should not receive at travel clinic


• Avaxim® contains traces of neomycin. The vaccine should not be used in subjects with known hypersensitivity to neomycin


• Acute febrile illness ( minor illness not contraindication)

Pregnancy and breastfeeding are contraindications to receiving the vaccine at a citydoc travel clinic

Travel Clinic network CityDoc, side effects vaccine

Clients will be advised of the common side effects during the travel clinic consultation. These include-Mild pain at the injection site, generally feeling weak, pains in the muscles and joints, headache, feeling or being sick, loss of appetite, diarrhoea, stomach ache, mild fever

• Patient informed of possible side effects at travel clinic appt.


• Common side effects usually disappear within 1-2 days without treatment


• Patients with unusual or persistent side effects should be reviewed by a GP at travel clinic
