STD test London – what do we test for? – Part I

What will you be tested for when you arrange an STD test at London’s Moorgate Medical clinic?

Some people come to us for an STD test because they know they have had unprotected intercourse and are worried about the possible consequences. Others come to us because they are already exhibiting some symptoms of a sexually transmitted disease and they know they need to get it sorted out as soon as possible. If you have symptoms, we’ll listen to what they are and we’ll try to understand the circumstances under which you may have contracted the disease. We’ll always test for a range of STDs, however, to make sure that we’ve covered every possibility. These include:

  • Chlamydia – this is the most common STD in the UK, and yet many people haven’t heard of it, or know very little about it. It can affect both men and women, although younger women are more at risk from it.  It’s important to get tested for Chlamydia because it often presents no symptoms at all, or symptoms that can easily be mistaken for something else, such as cystitis and some lower abdominal pain. It can cause infertility in women and inflammation of the testicles in men. It can also, of course, be passed onto other sexual partners.
  • Gonorrhoea – commonly affecting younger people – up to the age of around 25, Gonorrhoea is similar to Chlamydia in that it is usually passed through sexual contact, and, for some, has no symptoms. For those who do exhibit symptoms however, they can include lower abdomen pain, painful urination and discharge. Untreated, it can cause inflammation in female sexual organs and the male epididymis and on rare occasions can result in high temperatures and rashes.
  • Mycoplasma/Urea plasma – both of these conditions are lower genital tract infections that usually cause discharge from the urinary tract. The quantity and colour of the discharge can vary from one person to another, and may be accompanied by other symptoms including a painful genital rash, painful urination and the need to pass urine often. An STD test at our London clinic will help to identify this problem and we can prescribe the appropriate antibiotics.

In Part II, find out about HIV tests, Herpes and Syphilis.
