STD Test - Don't Die of Embarrassment
Taking an STD test can be embarrassing but it could save your life – especially if the test is for HIV.
HIV has been at the forefront of media attention in the past few weeks, ever since Stephen Fry launched his documentary on the subject highlighting the general ignorance around the disease. If more people come forward for an STD test as a result then that can only be a good thing. The ignorance surrounding HIV was also highlighted in a separate story in Australia. Andre Chad Parenzee was convicted in South Australia’s Supreme Court for endangering the lives of women by having unprotected sex.
STD Test – Unprotected Sex
It seems more young people only consider condoms as important to prevent pregnancy not to ensure they don’t get an STD. A survey showed that the majority of under-26 year-olds simply don’t see a risk. It’s important to take regular STD tests for your sexual health to rule out infections, many of which don’t make themselves known through immediate symptoms. Leaving an STD untreated can cause fertility problems and if the STD test in question is for HIV, it can be fatal.
STD Test revealed HIV Positive
The Australian man convicted of unsafe sex without a condom was HIV-positive, but he said in his defence that there was no clear evidence between the virus and Aids. His plea demonstrates the danger of ignorance. Even if you are aware yourself of the risks, your partner may be nonchalant or reckless about them. An STD test is the only way to find out if you are HIV positive, which can of course turn into full blown Aids.
STD Tests Don’t Lie
Many people with an STD don’t know they have it, and some who have had an STD test, lie about it. It’s a sad state of affairs, but a reminder that you should always practice safe sex. The Australian man infected three women, lying to all of them, saying he did not have the virus. He was diagnosed via an STD test in 1998 but went on to marry his first victim. His next girlfriend who he infected was a mother of two – she almost died of a related illness and needs intensive medical treatment for the rest of her life.
An STD test is the only reliable source of truth. The Australian had lied to the women because, he told the jury, he was afraid of loosing them. Court cases where men knowingly infect their sexual partners are a stark reminder of why safe sex matters.
