Private Doctor - London GPs turn back on NHS

It doesn’t offer much confidence to patients, a news report in the Evening Standard revealed it isn’t just patients opting for a private doctor, London GPs are too.

More people who have the finance are choosing to register with a private doctor. Private Doctor London Demand

A study published in the Evening Standard newspaper revealed that almost four out of ten GPs would rather be treated by a private doctor, London has some of the best private doctors around and the figure reveals that some GPs have little faith in the NHS. The figures were released in early 2007 after 600 family doctors were questioned. It turns out that 28% of those GPs had taken out private medical insurance, with 10% saying they would prefer to use a private doctor, London or across the UK, if a relative became ill.

The fact that a third of GPs would opt for a private doctor for their own health welfare says a lot about the quality of service a private doctor in London can provide. It also says something about the huge pay rises many GPs have been awarded, with the average GP salary reaching £100,000 per annum.

33% prefer private doctor

London magazine, Hospital Doctor, conducted the survey which found an average of 22% of GPs had medical insurance and some 33% would prefer private treatment. Some critics said the reasons GPs opted for private healthcare signified key problems within the NHS – including the fear of infections, the fear of waiting lists and the lack of resources. One of the reasons why it was thought that GPs prefer a private doctor - London and across the UK - is because GPs need to get back to work quickly and don’t want to be treated in the hospitals in which they work.

Comfort, convenience and standard of service, as well as individual attention and privacy, are all factors that influence patients to turn to a private doctor; London especially suffers from overcrowded NHS surgeries, where it’s often difficult to find a convenient appointment.
