STD Test – Prevention better than cure
Less people would have unwelcome STD test results if they took safe sex seriously.
Sexual health advisors in Canada are urging people to accept condoms as everyday items – as innocuous as toilet paper or soap. They feel that too many people are still taking preventable risks and playing ‘Russian roulette’ with their health because of embarrassment, or simply ignorance, when it comes to buying condoms. If more people wore condoms as a matter of routine, then the unwelcome news after an STD test would be greatly reduced.
Concerned about an STD test? Wear a condom
For better STD test results, sexual health advisors are saying that the image of condoms needs revamping ‘making the love glove sexy’. The issue isn’t about price or affordability or even accessibility but because many people still feel uncomfortable buying condoms. But statistics show as the number of STD test results reveals that we can’t afford not to address the reluctance to practice safe sex.
STD test results rise
The story has become newsworthy in Canada as the Canadian Federation for Sexual Health has revealed that condom use has declined in the past decade. The trend has been dubbed troubling – and as a result the reported STI rates from STD tests have steadily increased since 1997. In America, some religious fundamentalists believe teenagers for example should practice abstinence and so resist safe sex education. But sexual health advisors believe that if teenagers are going to have sex anyway, they need to be empowered and know how to take the right precautions. Otherwise, young people could be at risk – especially if they are too embarrassed to have an STD test. The issue is a major concern in Britain too.
Haven’t taken an STD test?
Chlamydia cases are on the rise in people aged 15 to 24, with many cases being unnoticed or unchecked as symptoms can be negligible. Without an STD test, the STD carrier is at risk of infecting others as well as suffering the symptoms such as infertility. Syphilis and gonorrhea rates have increased and it’s reported that 20% of HIV cases occur in the under thirties.
It’s clear that the embarrassment or stigma surrounding sex, especially in younger generations, needs to end so more people come forward for an STD test and practice safer sex. Sexual health advisors say there needs to be a more positive spin on condoms to encourage use. And that by reducing the worry of needing to take an STD test or catching an STD wearing a condom will in fact make sex more fun. It’s advised that you use a condom if you are sexually active unless you’re in a trusting monogamous relationship and you’ve both had an STD test to put you in the all-clear.
