HIV Test – London Young Women Complacent’

A recent news story revealed that when it came to taking an HIV test, London’s young women were blasé about their sexual health.

The Body Shop and ‘yoof’ culture music channel MTV joined forces to poll young women in the UK in order to ascertain their current attitudes towards the threat of HIV. For many women in the UK it can be a daunting prospect to take an HIV test, London young women however tend to be more street-wise, don’t they? Not according to the survey.

  • 7 out of 10 young women (aged between 16 to 30) don’t believe they are at risk from HIV so would not consider an HIV test, London or elsewhere
  • 92% of the women questioned said they would not think a condom is an ‘essential handbag item’ on a night out

Women shun HIV Test – London’s Youth are Blasé

The study reveals a worrying complacency when it comes to awareness and prevention and points to the prospect that many young women may not be going for an HIV test – London has an estimated 30% of HIV victims who are not aware they have the disease. And experts are now concerned that this ignorance or failure to have an HIV test, London and across the UK, is hindering efforts to curb the spread of HIV.

HIV Test – London’s Health Protection Agency

Fewer young people, especially young women are aware of the threat of HIV and do not contemplate an HIV test; London’s Health Protection Agency believes this is due to a lack of funding in raising awareness and education on the risks of HIV transmission. The estimate that up to a third of people who are living with HIV are unaware they have the disease is a scary thought, and one of the main reasons why the disease can spread. Knowing you have HIV means you will take the proper precautions to protect future partners. The only way to know is to take an HIV test, London has specialist STD clinics that are sensitive, discreet and understanding to encourage young women to come forward.

More results of the Body Shop/ MTV survey reveal:

  • Half of the women questioned said they ignored the subject of condoms when talking about their sex life
  • One in ten felt it was the male partner’s responsibility to carry the condom
  • One in ten felt a woman carrying a condom was ‘easy’
  • Only 32% of the women questioned made it a priority to ask their new partner about their sexual past.
