STD Test – the Secret Killer
Sex can be deadly, and in Australia one man has been accused of purposely spreading an STD prompting those who fear they might be victims to take an STD test.
Ever since HIV first became widespread and a public health concern there has been underlying fears that the STD could be spread on purpose. Catching an STD is in most cases a mistake – usually as a result of unprotected sex and because of ignorance. It’s recommended that all sexually active people take a regular STD test – even if they are in a monogamous relationship. The truth is people can lie, especially when it comes to sex or affairs of the heart. The only thing people can rely upon is the black and white truth of an STD test result.
STD test – a matter of course
Although there are risks even for married couples and in monogamous relationships, in Australia a news story caused concerns that they could have a public health emergency on their hands. A male sex worker was arrested on suspicion of allegedly spreading a sexually transmitted disease on purpose. The man however was granted bail and released. The story no doubt prompted many in the locality to come forward and take an STD test. What the STD the male sex worker had however was not disclosed to the court, so those concerned they had contact with the man would have to take the whole range of STD tests available.
STD spread on purpose
The Australian man worked as a prostitute, but the authorities denied his release was a public health emergency, although did dub the situation, ‘very serious’. Some however felt the fact the court did not reveal what STD test those who were worried should take, or highlight the symptoms people should look out for, was unfair. The court said the details of the STD were not of public interest at that time.
Urged to take STD test
The prostitute had not registered himself as a sex worker, and the man could still be charged with knowingly infecting someone with an STD. The man was ordered to stop working as a prostitute. The authorities in Australia however did urge anyone who believed they may have come into contact with the prostitute to contact their local sexual health clinic and undergo an STD test as soon as possible.
