MMR Vaccine – A Global Resolution

Instances of measles, mumps and rubella have hit an all time low since the introduction of the MMR vaccine in 1988. Such is the success of the MMR vaccine that it is now used in over 90 countries across the world.

The spread of measles, mumps and rubella could have very serious health repercussions for a nation which is why so many countries have utilised the MMR vaccine in order to curtail the proliferation of these diseases and ensure the continued well-being of their natives.

MMR Vaccine – From USA To Australia

The MMR vaccine is accepted to be the most effective means of tackling the triumvirate of diseases and this has led to countries including the USA, New Zealand, Australia and numerous across the European Union taking up the MMR vaccine as their first line of defence against these three serious afflictions. Approximately 500 million doses of the MMR vaccine have been administered in the 90 countries that use it since it began.

MMR Vaccine – The Worldwide Effect of Measles

Measles is one of the most widespread diseases in the world and the importance of the MMR vaccine is back up by the World Health Organisation (WHO) who state that measles is accountable for the majority of the 1.6m deaths per year that are vaccine preventable childhood diseases. WHO state that failure to administer the MMR vaccine to all babies can be related to the high proportion of measles related deaths. Dr Bjørn Melgaard, former Director of Vaccines for WHO, paints a startling picture of just what a problem measles poses when the MMR vaccine isn’t implemented. He states, “Measles is still a major childhood killer, with over 30 million cases and nearly 900,000 annual deaths in recent years. These figures are even more shocking given the fact that effective immunization, which includes vaccine and safe injection equipment, costs just US$ 0.26.”

MMR Vaccine – The Measles Plan

It goes without saying that cost always has a major part to play when it comes to health, especially so far as poorer countries are concerned. However, the MMR vaccine is extremely cost effective and of all vaccines, it provides the best health benefits in relation to money spent and the MMR vaccine saves more lives per unit than most other health interventions.
