MMR Vaccine – Not Enough Children Receiving The Vaccine

The MMR vaccine is a vital component in the prevention of measles, mumps and rubella in children in the UK. Research shows, however, that an insufficient number of children are actually receiving the MMR vaccine.

Since the MMR vaccine was first introduced in the UK in 1988, the levels of the 3 diseases that it battles (measles, mumps and rubella) have never been lower but a report in ViewLondon states that not enough children are actually being immunised by the MMR vaccine.

MMR Vaccine – Keeping Disease At Bay

By all accounts, the MMR vaccine has been a complete success since it was first used as a combined vaccination back in 1988. Unfortunately, however, research carried out by the UCL Institute of Child Health has discovered that the levels of children actually receiving the MMR vaccine is below what is required to prevent outbreaks of the disease. Their research discovered that although the rate of immunisation has increased in 2007, it hasn’t been at the required level and the cases of reported measles increased. The MMR vaccine is a very important immunisation due to the high communicability of the diseases which means they can be spread easily.

MMR Vaccine – At Risk Groups

The research conducted by UCL Institute of Child Health discovered that the children who remained unimmunised were more likely to come from a household with a greater number of children and a single parent. The research concluded that provisions need to be made to ensure that social inequalities don’t preclude the uptake of the MMR vaccine. A spokesman for the UCL Institute of Child Health stated, “For most parents who declined MMR it was a conscious decision and it is therefore important to ensure ready access to evidence based information about MMR vaccine, tailored to respond to particular concerns, questions, and beliefs of different groups.”
