Single MMR – the NHS Facts
Having a single MMR vaccine as opposed to multiple single vaccines is officially recommended by the NHS.
There are many reasons why you might go to a private doctor to get a single MMR vaccine. In London, walk-in clinics can be convenient, accessible and fit in with your busy lifestyle. If you’re considering a single MMR vaccine for your child, you’re probably aware of the negative stories the MMR jab has had. For your peace of mind, CityDoc is happy to reiterate the NHS stance on the MMR jab. The NHS officially and confidently recommends the single MMR jab for children.
The single MMR jab
The single MMR job has undergone careful and rigorous tests and trials and is considered the safest and most effective vaccine to help protect children from measles, mumps and rubella. According to the NHS guidelines, doubts about the single MMR vaccine have centred around two issues: the fear it is linked to autism; and the concern it may overload a child’s immune system. The NHS responded to these fears explaining why the single MMR jab is safe.
Single MMR: Autism fears
According to NHS guidelines and research, the increase in autism in the UK started long before the single MMR jab was introduced; additionally, there was no increase in cases when the MMR immunisation programmes began. As the NHS website states, “…there has not been a single study that has shown a risk of MMR causing autism. But, there have been many studies that cannot find a link. The weight of scientific evidence strongly indicates that MMR does not cause autism.”
- The single MMR vaccination was thoroughly tested
- It has over ten years of use in America before it came to UK shores
- Globally, over 90 countries use the single MMR vaccine
- 500 million MMR doses have been used
- As well as the NHS the World Health Organisation recognise the single MMR vaccine as extremely effective with “an outstanding safety record”
- There is no scientific link between the single MMR vaccine and autism
Single MMR and the immune system
The other fear is children’s immune systems will be overloaded by the single MMR vaccine. However, it’s believed that their immune systems can, according to the NHS, “respond to 10,000 different immune challenges.” Additionally, the three viruses in the single MMR jab have different incubation periods so that the body doesn’t react to all three at the same time.
In conclusion, the NHS guidelines state: “The evidence is there for all to see. Immunisation using MMR is safer and more effective than the use of single vaccines. Choosing single vaccines is a higher risk option for our children and that is why we will continue to recommend MMR.”
