Chlamydia Tests

Chlamydia is caused by a bacterium Chlamydia trachomatis and is the most common STD in the UK There are approximately 120,000 newly diagnosed cases of Chlamydia and 19,000 of Gonorrhoea per year in the UK.

Who Should take a Chlamydia Test?

This test is an important screen for everyone, as Chlamydia is common affecting up to 1 in 15 people and 50 % of affected men and 70 % of women have no symptoms.

How is the Chlamydia test done?

We can test accurately using a simple urine sample (please avoid passing urine for 2 hours prior to the Chlamydia test).
London Clinics have results available in 24-48 hours and the rest of the UK within 2-3 working days.

We test for gonorrhoea as standard at the same time.

How is Chlamydia treated?

We can treat Chlamydia with the following antibiotic courses

  • Doxycycline 100mg twice daily for 7 days
  • or

  • Azithromycin 1gram orally in a single dose

What are the complications of Chlamydia if untreated?

Women
Pelvic inflammatory disease, infertility and ectopic pregnancy.
Men
Infertility, epididymitis, urethritis

Transmission

Through unprotected sexual activity including oral sex. Can be transmitted to sites such as eyes and throat by direct contact from sexual secretions.
