Cervical Smears and HPV Testing

All Smears performed using liquid based cytology (LBC).

HPV (Human Papilloma Virus) is responsible for the majority of cases of cervical cancer. HPV is a common virus spread through skin to skin sexual contact. The virus is also responsible for genital warts.

We can screen for the 20 major types of HPV at the same time as performing the smear.
Types 16 and 18 are responsible for 90 % of cervical cancer.

When we detect high risk HPV , we advise rechecking in 6 months time for the continued presence of those same subtypes. If we detect high risk HPV on the next sample we would then consider referral for colposcopy(microscopic examination of the cervix). HPV testing acts as an early marker of cervical cancer risk often prior changes seen on a traditional smear.

Cervical smear £125

Cervical smear plus HPV £225 Prices include consultation.

Genital Warts and HPV

Types 6 and 11 of HPV are responsible for 90 % of genital warts. Genital warts are one of the most common STDs in the UK and highly infectious. Low risk HPV subtypes usually give risk to genital warts , as opposed to high risk subtypes which are a risk factor for cervical cancer.

If a client has no evidence of HPV types 6 or 11 on their smear and no history of genital warts, then consideration can be given to receiving the cervical cancer vaccine Gardasil. Please see the Cervical Cancer vaccine section of our site for further information.
